I was on MOOs for a long time, and set up one with Kayo Matsushita at the New School. I didn't find any difficulties with choosing; in fact, people formed associations and friendships paralleling real-world ones. There were also politics, and issues of governance; Dibbell goes into that at great length. Being on a MOO was a continuous narrative in fact; as the web developed, people flocked to IM and other forms, including blogs; the MOOs now are mainly for teaching and the older ones still function quite well with core people - Alan
