Similarly, while learning about Native American beading techniques, I
was introduced to the concept of a "spirit bead." Artisans would
intentionally string a wrong-colored bead into an otherwise flawless
pattern as an act of humility, recognizing the imperfection of humans. I
find that I spend more time looking at beaded works, looking past the
beautifully intricate patterns in an effort to identify the "wrong" bead...
Subtle injections of error remind us of the paradox of perfection.
